Is Deregulation Driving the Booming Economy?
in Economy

President Trump policies promote deregulation, but the question is if deregulation will help economy to boom long term, will only provide a short term boost, or will actually negatively impact the economy.

  • The issue I see with deregulation is that it will introduce risk to the environment.  Regulation is like a safety net that prevents large and systemically important institutions to get us in a situation where will be forced to bail us out again.  Chances of them getting in that situation are pretty low (maybe once in a a couple of decades), but once it happens it leads to severe and unfair impact to the taxpayers.
So sure, deregulation will likely boost economy in a short term as less regulatory cost is required and businesses can move at faster speeds.  Longer term though we will likely pay the price...again...
    WhyTrump - a good question
  • The economy will boom for a while, but it will drop back down like it does every time with these lower taxes. Then everyone will blame it on the Democrat president who comes after Trump, just like they did with Obama.

Trickle-down economics causes the money to trickle-up after the rich people need to be bailed out with tax money.

Deregulation overall always boosts the economy, both short-term and long-term, because it opens up a lot of incentives to invest and innovate, increasing the circulation of finances and, hence, the economical growth.

That said, I do not see Trump as someone who promotes deregulation. Tariffs on imported goods is as regulatory as it gets, barring outright prohibition of those goods. It is the Republican party that promotes deregulation, while Trump promotes protectionism and isolationism.

The Republican party says they promote deregulation, but, like so many things, Trump is the only one who actually implements the things the Republican party says it espouses.  As a candidate, Trump talked about the need for deregulation, going so far as to say as much as 70% of regulations can be eliminated.  As president, he has halted the implementation of many of Obama's last-minute regulations, He has signed an EO that requires the elimination of 2 regulations for every new regulation and he has appointed people who share his vision to lead federal agencies.  The best you can say about either Bush was that regulations grew a bit slower than they would have if a Democrat had won the election.
  • Deregulation is a moderately sized component of the booming economy in the United States.
