Will The Amazon S3 Outage slow down public cloud adoption by large enterprises
in Technology

Amazon outage was unprecedented and broke many sites across the internet.  Advertised as super scalable and better than large enterprise data centers, Public Cloud adoption led by Amazon was winning the war against big corporate data centers.  Will this outage change the outlook?

Arguments

  • I think so. The overall argument was that it is more secure and outage-prone.  This historic incident will be a reason for many nay-Sayers to avoid public cloud in the enterprise environment. I am also concerned about impact to Amazon future valuation and expect amazon stock to drop tomorrow. I am sure there will be lots of coverage from the analyst community.
  • Yes, many websites could not produce images.
  • Surprisingly today (next day after the outage) amazon stock actually closed higher. I guess the sentiment is that it will not cause long term damage. I think though it may likely influence enterprise decisions to switch to aws for those still on The sidelines
  • The stock closed higher. I think it is a good lesson about availability and contingency planning. Some of the future customers may look elsewhere or just reconsider public cloud decisions, but existing customers are likely stuck with aws anyway
