Conservative Split Over Import Tax Imperils Trump’s Overhaul

NY Times published an article how Trump's proposal divides many conservatives and many argue that the new form of taxation to tax imports with 20% tax while removing export taxes will cause many economic issues.
Proponents argue that Border adjustment tax will serve Trump's nationalistic policies while creating more American jobs.

It will just cause increases in consumer prices and it will unfairly pick winners and losers at expense of overall market inefficiency

It's an extremely complex issue and only an outsider like Trump can pull off something that drastic. Not sure given the controversy after what happened with the health bill it can happen or not. 
Many are lobbying against this import tax as it likely will adversely impact some industries.  Strategically the tax may make a lot of sense, as it will change the competitive landscape and will make progress towards Trump's America first promiss.

Import tax is a ludicrous idea and we will all end up paying the price.  It will make our industries less competitive since companies outside of the US will have much lower cost of goods. So expect higher prices and a structural competitive disadvantage.

Yes, it is great for our government and economy. This should be put in place or something extremely simialar.

@joecavalry, I respectfully disagree that it is a good idea.  Trump attempting to conduct open heart surgery on world economy by introducing import tax will disadvantage American consumers with higher prices.  Lets say a German company can manufacture the same product in China without tax, they will be able to price their product 20% lower and will gain market share at the expense of American companies that pay the tax.

Yes, other bordering countries may not be happy about it and countries such as China in general, but it's great for our economy.

@ueaniummkne , I am not comvinced that it will be good for our economy. I agree that China and other major exporter countries will be unhappy, but USA will be put in a disadvantage but not being able to source labor and products from lowest price countries, and therefore will get pressure to raise prices for consumers.  Companies from other countries will be able to produce products at lower costs and will be tough for American companies to compete with.
