U.S. Attack on Syria Cements Kremlin’s Embrace of Assad

Many are questioning Trump's sudden support of Syrians, in reaction to the Chemical weapons attack.  But equally strange is Putin's solidified support of Assad.  Why is Putin so interested in supporting Assad?

Putin is taking on political risks, especially ahead of upcoming Russian election by prolonging Russian imvolvement in this war.  I am still unclear why he is taking such a strong position, but Trump-Putin relationship is likely a key cause.

Putin needs to ensure Russia presence in Syria, as thats essentially the only way they can maintain any type of material presence in the middle east.  Also, Putin is not known of backing out of his positions.
