No. Smartphones are technological innovations that simply our lives. They don't hijack our minds, we use them for many purposes: -To call someone -To send messages -other.
They do not hijack our minds, we use them for whatever purposes we have. Think about how easier it is to tell someone about something important, rather than using a piece of paper and waiting days for the message to be delivered, smartphones resolve that problem. They eliminate the need to take such action, they are great tools, they should be appreciated, because they are a prime symbol of human intelligence.

@George_Horse, overall I agree that smartphones improved our lives. However, I also agree with the research that it has adverse side effects. We should be mindful how we use the phones amd how it impacts us

George - they do not HAVE to but because of social media they do. When someone makes some ignorant statement like "Big Oil" the kiddies will all line up to support such a stupid idea because it sounds anti-status quo to them and of course stupid people like to convince themselves that they are much brighter than everyone else. And they are even brighter if more stupid people agree with them.
So although I have to use a smart phone as a memory because of a past concussion, and perhaps you use it for real things, the social media is nothing more than forcing supreme ignorance upon the majority of people not just in the US but throughout the world. Perhaps as much as half of the millennial generation will never live a normal happy life convinced by social media that the government is against them. They will not even vote and then say they aren't represented. When you study the subject the one thing you will find that they agree upon is that technology improves one's self.
Tell me - what does the ability to fly to the moon do to improve your life? What would a self-driving car do to help you? Are you incapable of driving yourself? Or is your life so hurried that you have to work while traveling to work?
Most of technology is nothing more than convincing people that they should buy something.

Phones to hijack the mind due to their affect of making people obsessed to them.
Not everyone can be obsessed to them. If much time is spent using it to communicate with friends, or to see things about news.

@George_Horse, not everyone, but many. While many positive uses and I am not proposing giving it up, it's important to acknowledge the cons and to be self aware if the usage
@Max_Air29, I also agree that overall positive and productivity gains offset any drawbacks. However, if we can also minimize the drawbacks that will be good. I like the research
