Verizon data of 6 million users leaked online - expect that as the new norm
in Technology

Verizon confirmed on Wednesday the personal data of 6 million customers has leaked online.

The security issue, uncovered by research from cybersecurity firm UpGuard, was caused by a misconfigured security setting on a cloud server due to "human error."

The error made customer phone numbers, names, and some PIN codes publicly available online. PIN codes are used to confirm the identity of people who call for customer service.

No loss or theft of customer information occurred, Verizon told CNN Tech.

I argue that as technology environmental becomes more public-cloud focused, that is the new norm we should expect in the future.  If there is a configuration error that gives public permissions to a directory on a server in a data center, that is exposed to company employees.  If the same configuration error is in a public cloud like in this case, it is exposed to the World.  We will see more and more of such issue, and should expect it as new reality.  Your data is not safe, be paranoid and change your paswords really often, monitor diligently your credit reports, and bank accounts.

Persuade me otherwise.

Arguments

  • I don't think that's the expectation. Sure, there will continue to be leaks and human errors, but we will get smarter about security and how to protect data in the public cloud. There will be maturity frameworks, tools, 3rd party assessments.
It is true that everyone should take precautions about their data, but at the same time there is no need to panic
  • @ChangeMyView, I agree that security will get better and better, but so will the hackers and sophistication of human errors will increase.
