The primary goal of the prison system should be to rehabilitate convicts so that we can make them functional and contributing members of society, rather than have said convicts serve as mere burdens on society.

The main goal of the prison system is to punish those who break the law in an attempt to teach them that what they are doing is wrong.

The main issue though is that the American prison system doesn’t actually work. Once the convict has served their time, they tend to commit more crime. 

Compare that to the Nordic prison systems where convicts are rehabilitated to become functional in society
