Netflix 13 Reasons Why - should teens watch it?
in TV SHOWS

By agsragsr 851 Pts

New Netflix Series - 13 Reasons Why. Based on a young adult bestseller, this series explores suicide, bullying, sexual assault, substance abuse, depression, and anxiety in teens. It is being watched by many young people in our schools and has become a highly trending topic in teen conversations on many social media sites.

A number of concerns about the show have been raised by professional organizations.  Specifically, the show does not properly address important aspects of mental health.  The show also depicts school officials as ineffective in addressing student needs.  If your child has not yet watched 13 Reasons Why, there are several professional mental health organizations who have taken the opinion that they not be encouraged to watch the series.

  • I would go with guidance of professional mental health organizations for teens not to watch it.

  • No, many schools including middle, elementary, high schools are sending out physical and electronic notices and more possibly. The movie made by Netflix is not liked by some groups, orginizations, schools, people.

  • No one has any obligation to watch it, but they can watch it if they want, just like any tv show/movie, or just like enjoying any kind of subjective content, like books/music/art.
  • @melanielust, yes everyone had that right.  But do you agree with mental health professionals on their recommendation to avoid?

  • @melanielust, if cigarette makers sell a product that has serious health risks, we regulate them and tax them.  We make them put severe warnings on their product to ensure consumers (or arguably addicts) understand the risks.
this Netflix film causes a disturbing spike in depression and suicides in kids - that should deserve a similar treatment like cigarettes in some ways.

I agree with @melanielust. @ale5 , it's a bit of an extreme comparison to this movie and cigarettes.
