  • @brontoraptor, welcome to Debateisland.  I will argue against limiting immigration based on absolute headcount number.
Our country is based on immigrants and locking it down from net new immigration will destroy the founding principles that we were founded on.  Our population (and world population )will continue to grow due go high longivity rates and oher inflows.  We do need to look for broader solutions with technological advancement to help with that.

Immigration should not be shut down due to its positive effects. Immigration should be limited and based on merit, like Trump wants.

  • hi @billpassed
thank you.  I agree with your points.  Keeping legal immigration flowing will be important for our country, while at the same time cracking down on illegal immigration.  A cap on total number is likely not a good idea.

  • If our goal is to control total population max then we should also discuss whats happening with aging population and life expectancy.  That is going to have a large impact on the total population
  • I don't think that immigration should be stopped when our country hits a certain population. First of all, our country is built around immigrants and there are millions of immigrants. Also, if our country were to close immigration what would happen to people that work for border control and/or immigration department. Next, our country is still going to keep adding people to its population. What would the next debate be? How many people does it take until we can stop having kids? That makes absolutely no sense and I think that immigration doesn't make a huge difference. Also, all of the people that are fleeing from war-torn countries, or countries where there was a natural disaster etc. need a home and we have that option available for them.
  • Why stop them? Use and abuse them instead.
  • Illegal immigration should be stopped, but immigration should be regulated or limited.
  • You do realize this country was not founded on a bunch of illegals right? It was founded on everyone has rights and freedoms that the gov can not infringe on. And BTW are you going to pay for illegals to enter the country? Because I can take a wild guess and say you do not pay taxes. @WhyTrump

Immigration is not and has never been a means to an end. It is a natural process existing in any free state that promotes open free market competition. Its goals is not to reach a certain population count, but, instead, to facilitate a more active trade of goods and exchange of ideas.

Let us assume the US has reached some arbitrary population count, say, 1.5 billion. Then an aspiring enterpreneur from France with a great business plan wants to open an innovative company in the US as the country with the freest market on Earth. Is there a single reason to not let this enterpreneur immigrate in the US? No. The increase of the population size by 1 means nothing next to the benefits the nation gets from a new successful innovative company within its borders. Apply this logic to every immigrant that has something to offer, other than draining the welfare infinitely - and you will realize that immigration should never cease to occur.

As a humble legal immigrant in the US, let me point out that not all of us are scary brown people beating down their wives and watching ISIS propaganda in the dark web. I would hope that my activity in science benefits the US no less than that of an American-born citizen working at McDonalds or Walmart. So why would you want to avoid letting people such as me in? Total population count in itself does not mean much; the quality of that population does, so, as long as the immigration system in the US keeps favoring high quality specialists and discouraging "welfare drainers", I see no reason to take any action against it.
